  • Good game, the controls are mostly the same as previous DS FPS games, it just involves using the right (I am right handed) set of buttons. What I mean is, the letter buttons (A,B,X,Y) lets you jump (You can still jump by double tapping the screen)and crouch.

    ugh the first thing i did when i started the game was click on multiplayer and only local multiplayer no wifi multiplayer :/
    the single player is really fun and addicting, but with no wifi multiplayer it ruins the whole thing...

  • OK, here are my thoughts on the game, been playing for about an hour now. The graphics are sub-par, the textures are amazing, but shapes are odd. The story is interesting, but not enough to make me care. The controls ruin the whole game, using the stylus to look is not only difficult, but it is physically painful. On even the easiest of difficulties I find my self being killed because I missed a single enemy in the last room and I can't turn quick enough to kill it. The sound is incredible, and multiplayer might be fun, but I don't know anyone who owns the game. All in all I'd give it a 4/10 Doom style controls would have saved the game, but everyone is trying to be far too inventive with the stylus and touch screen.

    on top of the controls killing the game, there is also no wifi which is a bigger let down to me than anything else. Hopefully Call of Duty Modern Warfare Mobilized will deliver for us.

    Stylus controls your aim, d-pad controls your movement, left shoulder button shoots.

    It feels a bit cramped to be honest, I'm not all that much of a fan of this game. But then again, no FPS game on the DS has yet to feel natural to me.

  • I don't find CORE's poor graphics and seemingly nonexistant storyline that interesting. The multiple doorways make the game seem like it'll be complicated, but really all of the doors are locked except for the ones necessary to move on with the game.

  • Metroid Prime, Moon and Call of Duty tried to get the DS FPS controls down yet no one figures it's impossible to perfect them. This isn't a bad game when you forget about expectations.

    arrows move you around, sytlus aim, triggers shoot and zoom.
    This seems to be the control scheme standard for DS FPS games:
    COD: WAW. Dementium, Moon, ect...

    Graphics: 9/10
    Beutiful graphics considering its the DS, and excellent level design. But the bottom screen hud seemed too "bubbly".

    Story: 3/10
    meteor crashes on earth. US sets up military base. Base is overrun with monsters. Nothing new.

    Audio: 10/10
    awesome hard rock background tunes, and crisp clear sound effects.B/G and SFX volume can be adjusted.

    Controls: 9/10
    It's sort of hard to hit the x/y/a/b buttons while your right hand is curled over the back of the ds with a stylus between two fingers and the other hand is tapping furiously on the arrow keys and left paddle. But then again, crouching isn't all that useful, and jumping can be accomplished by double tapping the screen. Stylus Sensitivity can be modified, invertible y axis, and lefty support.

    GamePlay: 9/10
    If CORE was going down the path of an old-school quake-like FPS, then it achieved its goal.
    And it's way too much fun. It's an easy game to get into, shootin up bad guys, collecting keycards, What's not to love?

    Overall score: 9/10
    I'm really enjoying CORE so far! It really reminds me of the 90s FPS scene. A recreation of a game that should have been made 12 years ago, On a console that fits it perfectly. Get it. Even if just for the multiplayer. ;)

  • Personally I agree with most of these comments, I've never been a big fan of DS FPS because it is a fair bit annoying getting used to aiming around with the stylus. And yeah personally I think a classic Doom style of shooting and aiming would work wonders on the DS, but again that's likely to be bashed due to being past its time.

    As for Ranmasters comment above... have you played the game yet? I just find it odd to rate it 10/10 and 5 stars when it wasn't THAT great, good, but definitely not worth a perfect rating.

  • This game would have rocked. 4 years ago. The graphics are SUB par what I expect for the DS, things are REAL blurry until you get close and then it's like when the optomtetrist puts that lense over your eye, suddenly things focus up a little better. The environments ares too dark, you can't see what you're shooting at and with little ammo it makes it harder.

    For righties, the ammo icon is UNDER your hand (so you don't see it) and if you're being shot from behind it's a pain having to swipe, pick up the stylus and swipe again (precious time wasted if you're being killed).

    The LB for shooting and moving had my hand cramping just in the first level on my DSi.

    No internet multiplayer? Only thing I could get an option for was local. Are you kidding me?

    You know what this game reminds me of? Doom... with horrible controls. Great game back then but since I've SEEN what the DS is capable of, it's unacceptable.

  • The different aiming icons is a great idea which should be added in other games (by the way the sniper is the gun that shoots the red beam.)

  • I too don't particularly mind about the lack of Wi-fi. If I wanted to play a FPS/3PS online on a handheld, I've got Resistance Retribution, Star Wars BF and Syphon Filter for PSP. The controls sound like they could be quite awkward, but knowing me, I'll probably have seen worse. I'm not a full on graphics whore so it doesn't fuss me overly on that. As it's an FPS I didn't expect a great story, so not bothered by that.

    So personally for me. Decent enough game to pass the time before Scribblenauts comes out.

  • dude along with the subpar graphics, the enemy AI sucks. one was behind me, and didnt shhot until i turned around. wtf??? other than that ok game. no internet but local runs smooth w/ no lag.

  • Controls are fine. Whats wrong with them? They are the same controls as Metroid Prime Hunters...and everybodys using a stylus? Where did the thumbstrap go? Anyways bad graphics especially when turning it gets really choppy. Also found that the text is really bland. Multiplayer might be fun if you have friends that own the game or dl it. 6/10

  • the only thing that its hard to aim is because, before you can aim at the enemy, you will be dead in seconds because of friggin low max health and it doesn't recover like in COD or in Metroid that health is all around as long as there are enemies...

  • The only enhancement that I feel is really necessary is some kind of turn-speed recognition/acceleration. When I move the stylus all the way to the side of the screen in a quick motion, it should recognize that I'm obviously trying to pull a 180. Even the simple addition of a 180 turn button would be alright, I guess.

    Graphics and animation are poor, at best.

    This was a massive disappointment for me.

  • X12: The DS Lite/DSi doesn't have a thumbstrap. And the controls really reminded me of Hunters... trust me, that's a bad thing. You basically need three hands to get the responsiveness you'd get on the other good DS FPSes (Moon, Dementium)... that's all I have to say. Hell, I couldn't even get through the training mission.

  • I'm back after playing it for around 30-45 minutes. I've got to say I'm quite disappointed. The gameplay is quite similar to Quake, Doom, and a little bit of Counter-Strike, but its not as fast-paced as you see it in trailers. The graphics are alright, but I honestly think that the characters were ugly. The story was pretty mediocre, the whole "secret base loses contact" gets old quick. I couldn't understand how you would be fighting humans in your own base, unless those guys were mind controlled by aliens or if those are terrorists who took over the base. As far as I can see, there is no map, but I could be wrong. I don't mind too much about the whole "no WiFi multiplayer" thing, but I was looking forward to trying that if it did. Overall, I'd give it a score of 6/10 just for trying, I think the developers tried too hard to make this game polish. I really tried to love (or even like) this game, but that's almost impossible, after trying multiple times, I finally decided to take it out of my SD card.

    @all: Moon and Dementium are great alternatives. Even GoldenEye, haha. (no CoD though, don't like the graphics in there, too blocky and grainy)

  • I don't think any FPS games are going to look better than this. Probably because the DS uses nearest-neighbor texture filtering which means it looks blocky.

  • Got it a couple of days ago and am trying to beat it, but its a pain. The story is a poor cliche and the dialogue is lowbrow and SO full of spelling errors. Controls are fine, i dont see what some people are complaining about, however gameplay is fundamentally flawed as almost every single enemy in this game hits you without fail regardless of how much you strafe, which turns the action into a constant monotonous lose HP-get HP bore. By the way, they hit you if they SEE you, as they are completely deaf and do not react to anything that happens around them. The AI is poor, theres no map (which isnt that much of a problem since the missions are pretty linear), graphics are confusing at times as there are doors everywhere but you cant tell if a door is there for you to go through or just for decoration until you slam into it.
    There are no innovations in this game, be it graphics, sound, story or atmosphere. I reached level 6 and was thinking of deleting this game but then i tried the multiplayer and changed my mind.
    The multiplayer mode is the best ive seen so far on the ds, its a lot of fun and adding a wifi mode instead of that useless storymode would have made this game gold. The controls, weapons, powerups and maps make the multiplayer a ton of fun if you have a buddy handy to play with. Its a little bit like Red Faction which is sweet.

  • @anyone w/ broken L and R buttons.
    Try locking your lips around the buttons and blowing hard. It get the dust out that you might have gotten in there while carrying your ds in your pocket. (i have to do this like once a week)

  • Short review:
    I liked the game, but the lack of Wi-fi was kind of disapointing.

    The story is not interesting, you won't care for it or the characters at all.
    And the text move to fast.

    As far as gameplay goes, the mapping can fell a little weird, but if you but the stylus sensitivity to max, and use a thumb stylus it will feel much better.

    The level design is ok, simetimes it feels kind of linear, but often they hide this by forcing you to go new directions, so that you won't always go straight forward. It does it's job.

    The graphics are ok, not as good as metroid, dementium or moon, but manages to do the job, some textures actually look really good.

    The difficulty is adjustable, and however you like to play, you will get killed, but it is not so hard that it won't make you come back. Sometimes you get the chance to enter a room from multiple directions, so if you die, you can try the other door, this helps giving some satisfaction.

    The music won't get any awards, it is ok, but sometimes it feels like you're listening to some tedious instrumental rock album, with way to much focus on the guitar, i recommend turning off the music in the options, and listening to something else, queens of the stone age will probably do.
    The gun sounds are pretty bad, the do not give you the same feeling of power as other games of the genre, but i still recommend you to keeo the sound efects volume up, so that you can hear the enemies.

    Over all, i enjoyed the game more that moon, as i thought that game was really tedious as far as level design goes, but moons story was far better than COREs.
    It is not as good as metroid or dementium, but I think it is worth a try, when using a thumb stylus, the controls are spot on.

    Sound: 60%
    Design: 70%

    Overall: 75%
    It is an OK game, fans of the genre should try it out.
    If you thought Moon was too tedious, and have grown tired of Metroid this game will probably satisfy your FPS needs.
    (Ps. This review only goes for the earlier levels, as I have yet to complete the game)

  • It was ok until that later levels when you have to do first person platforming. That is when it just gets almost unplayable.

    Also, you usually can't kil anyone without being hit first, so thats a joke

    and my biggest complaint about it is that it doesn't have any map to tell you where to go, combined with hundreds of doors that never open is confusing as all hell

    even if you love fps think about it twice before you download this....

  • This game is fine, the graphics are alright, the controls are good. Only thing i don't like are the animations and the fact that they're isn't any headshots. You can zoom in the game, but it's just a simple zoom, and you only get two maps on single-card mode, and the maps look very bland. The guns are generally the same and you don't have enough health. THE SNIPER RIFLE IS 1-HIT KILL. (The gun that shoots the red laser)

    The game feels and plays alot like Quake with a pinch of Doom thrown into the mix. This games seems... incomplete though to be honest. Single player is alright. I played it with my other DS. Though i'd rather have lots of map then 3 game modes.

    So if you want a FPS multi-player game for DS, i recommend Metroid Prime.

  • This game is absolutely horrible. The graphics are dismal at best, the controls cramp up your right hand, and is audio is best when turned off. It's not even worth free. For a game that had its release pushed back, I can't imagine what it would have been earlier this year. Like it has been said, if you are looking for a FPS, pick up Metroid. CORE blows toads.

  • If anyone's having problems with looking in this game, then go to options and set the sensitivity to its highest. Then it works great. Otherwise, it sucks. Oh and if you're having problems with the pointer, you could also change it in the options.

  • I don't understand all the raving over graphics. The art design is as generic and bland as most fps games. The 3D modeling is done well I guess but it's still boring to look at. I stopped playing this game early on because it was just too damn ugly.

    I still think that Ninja Gaiden still sets the standard on the ds as far as impressive "visuals" go. I think that Chrono Trigger looks better than this game; it's a classic example of not needing the polygon/pixelated muscle that other games try to use to impress gamers.

    Bottom line, it's all about art design.

    This game isn't even that fun anyway, it handles like a texting bus driver during rush hour in Manhattan.

  • I've a hard time with the controls.. you are using the stylus for aiming and moving the view, but you need to press the buttons for jumping and ducking, it's kinda awkward.

  • how i control CORE.
    i am right handed so this is how i control core.
    left hand thumb holds D-pad for movement.
    right hand index finger and thumb holds stylus for look around.
    left hand ring finger holds L for shooting.

    takes awhile to get used to controls but once you do, SERIOUSLY ADDICTING!

  • Awful. I don't expect crysis-level graphics from a NDS game, but this really tested my patience. In additon to this, the pace at which the character (I can't say human, the graphics are that awful) moves can be likened to a crippled hobble. Regarding the enemies I fought, I think I was fighting some fying robot jellyfish. And the plot was about as enthralling as watching wood be wood.

    The closest comparison is like Doom, but at low resolution, and without the "pick up and kill stuff" fun. This game is not acceptable, and needs more work. 1/5

  • what is wrong with everyone. Its a great game. the controls are fine, the music is fine, the multiplayer is fine, the graphics are fine, the story is a puny bit under fine but still fine. Overall its a great game. the only thing i'm struggling with at the moment is lack of health. Over all a great game. WORTH the download.

  • The first time I played this game, well... i didn't enjoy it that much. The graphics are really good actually for a FPS and to be from NDS too, the gameplay is... regular, the sound effects are also VERY regular, but what it really called my attention was the story and the characters (including the enemies), i expected a lot more from a game that in the "training tutorial" is awesome.
