I`ve only played it for a Hour or so, but seems far from what I`ve expected. Uninspired and lame. (and...OMG...this MUSIC!! what the...powered by Aspirin?) I guess I`ll give it another go, if there`s NOTHING else to play.

This game reminds me of Onimusha Tactics for GBA. I loved that game, but was never able to finish it (game was TOO long). I'll try and see how this game is.

Laevatein is a mystical sword mentioned in a very old Norse poem. It possesses the power to slay a giant rooster sitting on a tree. The weapon is referenced in several other RPGs and in the anime Lucky Star, among others.
this game is similar to watching paint dry. you know how fun games are interesting and have good play mechanics? this game is boring; boring story, boring gameplay, and pale battles that never end.

Battles quickly get repetitive.
The system in which different weapons have different attributes and the different characters have affinities corresponding is good. But it's been done before.
There's nothing that overly stands out about this game.
Mediocre at best in my opinion, but try it out see if you like it.

This game looks like a gba game. The battles and story are annoying and not fun at all. It's a shame, it had a good idea with the soldiers thing. But... why are they spanish? And it is nothing like Valkyrie Profile, or Fire emblem, or Yggdra Union. Its just not epic or entrancing enough to attract attention.

@lafowi22 - Take a look at the world map, it looks vaguely like Europe. The country your characters are in is roughly were Spain is. The bad guys are obviously Italian in origin. The story character you get in the third battle has a French accent/uses French words. They added in flavor text to help create atmosphere. (But I agree before I realized it, the fact that they were Spanish confused me.)
A MUST PLAY GAME......GOOD GRAPHIC....GOOD SOUND.....VERY GOOD TACTICS RPG GAME

Only 4mb so im sure its worth the download.
just so you guys know it gets from 64mb to 4mb because the game basically has the same data repeated over and over again. when it gets compressed that data turns into a single file. when it gets uncompressed it just duplicates that file multiple times.
There's no need to say "WTF only 4MB? can't be a good game" just DL first and test it.

argh...! why....why must exp only be awarded AFTER battle!? and why must KO's members lose out on all exp!? BAH.
also it seems enemies's valhalla bar or whatever they called it rises waaay too fast and is it normal in this game for leaders of enemy units to be able to demolish all soldiers in one of your units and hurt the leader of the unit like they do in the 3rd battle? and i havent really learned spanish or french much but i know at least some of the basics, and i swear at least one line in battle 3 had both french and spanish in it. the art is ok and the music isnt that interesting but the characters to me are...really unappealing and i cant say anything about the story yet obviously...except it isnt really looking that good...

For christ sake.... Final Fantasy wasnt the first rpg to exist, and FF Tatics wasnt the first to exist either... In my opinion, Final fantasy games aren't the best ones... Sometimes I prefer underated games wich end up becoming more interesting..
Plus... This is a pretty good game... It doesnt need good graphics to be a good game... DS doesnt have much graphics to begin with...

Hey I never said the game was bad..I said it LOOKS bad.
The game is compressed down to 4mb it's more like 64mb unpacked. Which is twice the size of most regular games and half the size of a typical DS RPG :p The game plays a bit slow, at least the first map in. However to make up for that there are quite a few weapons that can be acquired and each for the most part plays differently, which would mean a little more if this weren't an srpg. I wouldn't go anywhere near comparing it to FFT or Vandal Hearts or any other srpg. imho the only thing they have in common is the srpg genre. They look little alike, they play *nothing* alike, (again apart from standard srpg fare and heck, fft used an active type not turn type like this is...)
Also, a thumbs up at the poster back there who knew the origin of the name Laevatein...and heck, the Lucky Star reference too.
Also also... Valerie... I swear if they claim she's a Valkyrie I will ... uh... scream and rant about idiotic name schemes. It doesn't look good as armoured woman, randomly at a battlefield, carrying a sword anmed in a norse theme... and Vaettir is pretty close to Aesir... But then why would a Valkyire be slinging swords at a "spaniard"?

LOL TO THIS RETARDED GAME. I've been sorta looking forward to it but the game is absolutely idiotic or the there's something wrong with my rom lol.
In 4th battle (or 3rd i can't recall) when u fight those so called War Demons every unit I have gets wiped out in 1 round no matter what I try to do. THIS GAME IS FKED UP and broken as shit.
Also correct me if i'm wrong but what is the point of the damage display if u the numbers add up to 60 or 80 and u don't even endup doing 10 damage. Also I got fkin sick and tired of enemy surviving with 1 hp than i miss him like 5 times until he kills me -_-.
Either my game is broken or this game is total SHIT. I played pretty much every tactical RPG that came out on GBA and NDS but this one is by far the most shit one to have ever come out.
Yeah I think I'm going to skip this game for now. Watching a gameplay video made me less interested in it. I'll stick to Nostalgia. Have fun to whoever downloads this one.
I'm loving this game...I like this better that FFTA2 which is saying a lot as I loved FFTA. May only appeal to hardcore tactics fans, but this game is way better than Rondo of Swords and some of the other hyped up tactics games.
Give it a chance, you might be surprised. I was actually tuned off at first, but as I played more and started recruiting (including trying to get certain "special" generic recruits) it got very fun.

I have been a fan of tactical RPG games, and this just reaks. I have played almost every tactical rpg out, and this is almost the worse. Game play is very repetitive and the story is boring. And for all you FFT and FFTA fans, go back before FFT and play a game series called Arc the Lad on PS1 and you will learn what a real tactical RPG is and a true continuational game series where each beaten game follows to the next in the series and your stats from previous game is carried over to the new game. FINAL FANTASY TACTICS OF ANY KIND SUCKS!!!

sadly i think your hopes are in vain lol. I've been waiting almost like you, checking the site for the rom to comeout almost everyday and I hate the game mainly because damage calculation is not fair on the player side and the game tends to intentionally screw the player when opponent is at 1 hp.
NEXT GAME I'M WAITING IS Atelier Annie, hopefully that game will be great :).

Advance Wars 1, 2 and dual strike (the devision of turn based strategy :D)

Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 and 2 on GBA (my favorite of all times)
Disgaea DS
All those games are 1000 times better than this shity Hero's Saga. And even though some of them are on gba they are al MUCH BETTER GRAPHICS THAN THIS EPIC FAILING GAME.
Oh and i want to add something to this, for some reason, even though the gameplay is totally different and so it's the concept this game reminds me of OGRE BATTLES: March of the black queen on Zsnes. The only thing is comparing that game with this one is insulting to Ogre Battles as that game was pretty dam awesome :P, and sadly T_T even though it was made in 1995 it beats this one in graphics when it comes to battles :/, pretty sad considering that game is 14 years older :/

sorry Skane, but MOST of the gaming world would think you're the ignorant one after that rant, not the other way around. I've been gaming since probably before you were born (I'm just basing my guess on your age based on your post, could be wrong), I've seen the gaming industry change, evolve and become the megagiant it is today and have been right there, playing along with them. I'll tell you something: Chrono Trigger will NEVER die. Sure, its graphics are outdated based on what can be done today, but you can line it up against a hundred of "todays" RPGs and they wouldn't stand a chance comparing characters, story, gameplay and just plain fun. Comparatively, most of todays RPGs are just plain lazy next to Chrono Trigger...STILL.
As for this game, this is a tactical RPG at it's simplest and, imho, best. No frills, easy-to-pick-up controls, lots of varied characters all with their own backstory, making it fun to recruit and the battles are pretty standard only with the army aspect, which is cool. I can see why someone might not like it, that's fair, but it doesn't make it a bad game.

This game feels like a cross between 'Yggdra Union: We'll never stand alone' and Tactics Ogre... But those games are better then this one! :S
I'm a big strategy RPG fan, and I can see that this game has alot of good points, but it still didn't really speak to me. I do hape they make a sequel or a new game based on the same system, becouse this really has potential

I got Hooked and I cant stop play this game. The Vaetir '' Break '' that the weapons release are huge attacks to use against the enemy, and they´ll use it against you too. Appear to be ''God Like '' Attacks. One of the best Tactical for any RPG gamer. simple and fun

This game is kinda weird - it bores and entertains me at the same time :P I love unit design on the battle screen, but map screen looks bad even for GBA :P And audio is terrible, I felt like I'm playing on Gameboy Color for a while -_- The game itself is good, they just could fasten enemy turns a bit...
For people who don't get this game, it's not that hard. -_- You can't compare it's gameplay to that of FFTA/FFTA2 or it's graphics to them either. The gameplay and fight system are totally different. For those who are getting wiped out early in the game, try using the different attack options. Attacks are normal attacks. Charge is an attack that is about 1.5-2X the damage of regular attacks but the accuracy is lessened maybe 30-40% (all numbers are estimations based on how I played the game). Phalanx is about 25-50% weaker than normal attacks but the accuracy is increased maybe 20-30%. The different defense options should also be tried. Evade is pretty much increasing evasion by about 30%. Defend is just raising physical defense by 20-30% (not magic defense). This game is NOT for those who don't like a challenge. I have played through the whole game and let me tell you, if you can't get past the first 5 battles without trouble, you're never going to beat the last 2 Chapters of the game. The game is 3 Chapters total from what I remember. The difficulty in the last two Chapters are upped maybe from a 5 (first Chapter) to 8-10. The weapons make a huge difference.
Some suggestions are:
-wipe out soldiers of an enemy unit to lessen the threat of taking too many fatal hits.
-take advantage of character abilities, if you can heal, gain valhalla, heal soldiers, take extra turns, destat opponents, USE THEM, but use them on opponents that might give you trouble.
-take advantage of elemental advantages
-physical attackers are good against magical attackers and vise versa
-USE VALHALLA BREAK ON NON-DAMAGED OPPONENTS TO HAVE THE GREATEST EFFECT (wipes out most soldiers)
-Gang up on single characters until they're dead
-DON'T MOVE TO CLOSE INTO ENEMY ATTACK RANGE, You will get ambushed. If you can't avoid attacks due to land barriers, move your ranged characters as fast as possible to deal with those attackers.
There are other suggestions but it's already long enough. I believe that this was a truly WONDERFUL SRPG. The gameplay was different and it was challenging (not impossible, you just need to think).

Challenging, the game gives u accurate info yet the AI is smart enough to counter your tactics.
Stupid, the game gives u false statistics and cheats the player.
Hero's saga goes into the second category. As i've already stated, the player doesn't cause the exact damage showed in the numbers your units deal, YET the opponent deals that exact amount. To many times the opponent lives with 1 hp and than the player misses several times in a row until the AI builds his valhalla break.
This game is not challenging but severaly IDIOTIC and frustrating. WORST SRPG in history, and believe me i played pretty much all the SRPG that came out on GBA, NDS, PS2 and several other games from other consoles.
If you want to experience tactic RPG play anything else but this lame game.

If you are looking for some games to play, it's yes.
But it's not worth to play.
eternal-champ If you don't get the damage system, it's also partially your fault. The damage IS exactly as shown. The last actual number of each assault (every time you would choose a(n) attack/defense option) is the damage done. If you choose charge and let's say it says "miss, miss, 20, miss, 40, miss" then you have done a total of 40 damage for that charge option. Then you have 2 assaults left to do more damage towards the total for that encounter (entering the screen where you choose attack/defense options).
I will not disagree that this game lacks the full potential of the NDS and that many things could of been improved on, but it's definitely worth playing. The information given is accurate, it tells you in the beginning that each character gains valhalla break gauge whether they 'win or lose" the battle, meaning it doesn't matter if you take/do minor/major damage, you will still get part of your gauge charged. The thing about the 1 hp is something dependent on luck, you just didn't have much. The missing is due to the attack option chosen and the speed of each character in the encounter (bet you didn't look at that at all). If your character is slower by about 20 speed, expect your character to miss a lot. If your character uses phalanx however, it will have a 95% chance of hitting regardless of speed unless your character is slower by 100 (again all numbers are estimations).
Bottom line is, Yes this game needs improvement, yes it gets frustrating, however, it IS challenging, not stupid. You just have to understand the mechanics. It's the same in every game, if you don't know the mechanics, you're going to get frustrated. But of course, mastering a game is another level after that.
ok for all those complaining about how instructions arent clear THATS CAUSE YOU ARENT PAYING FOR THE REAL GAME okay? its all in the manual nobody likes a game where the tutorials use up half the filesize of the game
