Lately we have been getting a lot of question on how to extract games from a .rar file. Here, I'm going to explain what you need to do.

.rar is a file format similar to .zip. Basically, it's an archived file, which means it's been "compressed" to make the file size smaller.

What you need to do is go Here and download the program WinRar.

For Macs, you can go Here and download a Mac program to unzip .rar files.

When this is installed, find the file you downloaded, right-click it, and scroll down to "Extract here". This will remove the game file from the .rar file, which will make it usable.

If you have downloaded a Nintendo DS game, you can go to This Thread to learn how to send the game to your R4 card.

Unfortunately, Romulation does not have a tutorial for M3 cards. Hopefully one will be available soon.

Regards,

Winterreise

I downlooaded 7zip (is that the one?). But when i right-click the .rar it doesn't say "extract here" anywhere and when i go to "open with" 7zip is not chooseable in the applications folder even though I've installed it. What do I do now?

I'm not sure 7zip can open rar files, either way, the tutorial suggests getting winrar, not 7zip.

Bambi,

7Zip as a program does not fully support .rar files. If you're having problems, I highly suggest downloading WinRar.

7-Zip does fully support the extraction of RAR files. The only thing it can't do is create new RAR files. This is because the RAR codec is a proprietary codec and 7-Zip would have to pay a royalty to WinRAR to use it. UnRAR, however, is a free open source codec that can open RAR files but can't make RAR files

On 7-Zip for Windows, after installing you get a sub-menu on the right click menu named "7-Zip" that contains the "Extract Here" option. In my opinion 7-Zip is the best choice for Windows because of its extraction speed and because it is free software. I'm not entirely sure what options there are for Mac but I assume RAR-Expander is a good alternative.
