does this work on r4?
Graaah! ZEEEELDA GAAAAAME!!... Sorry about that... My inner Zelda fanboy has now been locked away, cadged to the back of my mind until LoZ: Spirit Tracks has either evaporated from memory, or been proven good (Still making up my mind on whether or not to eagerly hang out for it) Anyway, onto the game in question: LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, one of the only direct follow-on games in the Zelda series. It is, if you couldn't tell from the animation style, the sequal to LoZ: Wind Waker. It's not a bad sequel, but I tend to dislike sequals that jump platforms. Functionally: Phantom Hourglass makes complete use of the touch screen, everything from sword fighting and all the items are stylus controlled. This is not a bad thing (alothough I prefer the reliablity of the buttons) and is actually very well executed. Switching between items can be a bit of a pain, but is fluid enough to be bearable. One serious issue I had with the functionality of the game, and take note of this, the game makes use of EVERY piece of DS functionality. Touch Screen (for movement, writing and drawing), buttons, mic, and even (as alluded to in comments above) you come to a part of the game where you have to CLOSE THE DS LID (emulator users, sorry, but you're pretty much stuffed). Logically, of COURSE the DS can tell when the lid is closed, but it's so unituitive, I spent litterally half an hour running around that damned temple trying to find a way to solve this puzzle, only to give up, close the lid, go look up a walkthrough and then consider throwing my DS out the window having realised that I just solved the puzzle. Keep in mind each and every DS function as you play, or you'll come up a cropper (that's a funny expression. Just typed it without thinking. What the heck does it mean?) Two issues that come to light VERY quickly: The boat and the Ocean King's Temple. Both of these make up most of the game, simply based on time spent. Beware, you WILL get tired of both of these things. Scribble on your map wisely in the temple, as it WILL help the next bajillion times you go through. Speaking of, this has led me to a very nice feature, the freely graffitti-able map. Drop it down to scribble freely all over it. A conciencious player might write clues that they had found, mark pitfalls, record potentally important information. The rest of us draw male genitles and laugh ourselves silly, sometimes because of Nintendo's naievity at thinking that people wouldn't abuse this system. Fortunatly, the maps do not leak over to WiFi, so all you impressionable/innocent children/sheltered adults need not worry. It is truely a usefull feature, provided you respect its power. The multiplayer is lousy. It's so hard to control your units when you are not playing as Link, the Link player has such a large advantage that it's not much fun when my friend beats me consistanly even though he's never played the game before. Unfairness aside, a co-op mode would have been much more aprechiated than Vs. All in all, this is a well rounded, easy to play and enjoy (although not overly challenging) game, and well worth the download. I'd evn go as far as to say that it would be worth buying, if only to give Nintendo money that they will hopefull spend on a new LoZ game for the Wii that is NOT aimed at ****ing casual gamers. A proper heir to the Ocarina Of Time mantle, along side Twighlight Princess (or even better, a remake of Ocarina on the Twilight game engine! Twilight was excellent, a true Zelda game, and this is in no way me taking a shot at it) P.S. It's nice to see the tennis style back-and-forth-with-the-ball-of-magic-style of boss fights make a reapearance. Recycled it may be, but it's a classic piece of LoZ gameplay. P.P.S. Fans of Ocarina, I shall leave you with this warning: She lives still... Just when you thought you had finally gotten rid of her for good... You'll see what I'm talking about... or at least hear it...
